Sales funnels are a methodical strategy for creating leads and then winning customers and it is generally divided into different stages.

This funnel is typically depicted in the form of TOFU (top of the funnel), MOFU (middle of the funnel) along BOFU (bottom of the funnel). Some funnels go one step more and connect their phases with the phases in the buying process.

Some funnels mark their buyer stages as "Consideration,", "Awareness" and "Conversion." Other funnels use the more well-known "AIDA" (Awareness, Interest, Decision Interest, Decision Action).

The sales funnel is arranged in stages because the intention is to slowly but steadily provide content to leads that make them more likely to buy. Studies show that leads require at least seven contacts (also called contact points) before they are ready to buy; the funnel was designed so that it can trigger these contact points at regular intervals by providing relevant content.

The funnel offers a cadence and structure to begin outreach. It helps keep the leads engaged and warm while giving them the information they need to move them closer to making a decision.
